✦ The person behind the newsletter ✦

Hi, I'm Gabrielle.

I write The Camarillo Caller, a weekly newsletter covering local news, events, and the people and small businesses making this town interesting. I'm a one-person operation with help from Grant Miles from CamWX.com on the weather. I live in Camarillo with my husband Travis and our two kids, River and Arthur.

Why I started it

There was no real local news source for Camarillo. Plenty for Ventura County in general, plenty in legacy outlets like the Camarillo Acorn, but no independent voice covering this town specifically. If you wanted to know what was happening here, you were stuck digging through Facebook groups, Nextdoor posts, and county-wide sites trying to figure out what mattered to your block.

I started building The Camarillo Caller in 2025 while on maternity leave with my second baby, looking for something I could grow from home while staying close to my kids. The first issue went out in early 2026. The goal is for the Caller to become the go-to source for what's actually happening in Camarillo. Real local news, real local events, real local people doing interesting things.

A bit more about me

I'm originally from San Antonio, Texas. Came out to California for college at 18 and never left. Met Travis (Camarillo native), got married, and now I'm raising two kids here.

I've spent the last 15 years in retail management. A few years back I also ran a small nail polish business on Etsy that I eventually had to retire because keeping up with it alongside a full-time job got impossible. Everything I learned then about building things from home is going into the Caller now.

When I'm not working on the newsletter or chasing my kids, I'm outside. Hiking Sandstone Peak, Rancho Sierra Vista, Hill Canyon, anywhere in the Santa Monicas. I've camped my way up and down the PCH, through Joshua Tree, Yosemite, Sequoia, Mono Lake, Lassen, Mount Shasta, Death Valley, and chunks of Utah and Yellowstone. The trail is where I'd rather be most days.
